We all know those in-flight magazines tucked into the seat pockets in front of us. On the long journey from Berlin to one of Germany's favorite travel destinations, Mallorca, these magazines serve multiple purposes. They inspire travelers, provide valuable travel and transit information, and serve as an additional source of revenue for airlines through advertising space.
In the spring of 2022, SWISS, a major airline within the Lufthansa Group, made a bold decision to digitize their in-flight magazine. Initially, there were ideas to integrate the magazine into their app, but these plans were quickly set aside due to technical and organizational challenges.
Throughout the summer, I, along with SWISS and my colleagues, took the lead as the designer to create the new "Story Hub" for the airline. This platform not only aimed to digitize the SWISS magazine but also set the standard for digitalizing other magazines within the Lufthansa Group.
The SWISS Magazine was successfully launched in the fall of 2022, becoming an essential resource for travelers on all national and international SWISS flights. A unique technical feature allows passengers to download the website in their browser and browse its contents in offline mode while in-flight.
This project showcases how digital transformation can enhance the traveler experience and generate new opportunities in the aviation industry. It demonstrates the impact of good experience design and its capacity to transform traditional elements of the travel experience.
